Celebrating 10 years of being carbon neutral, we re-visit Stylecraft's environmental philosophy

At Stylecraft, we value decisions leading to good practice for the climate and the world we live in. 2017 marks the tenth anniversary of Stylecraft being carbon neutral, an achievement that was a first in the Australian commercial furniture industry. Anthony Collins, Managing Director of Stylecraft, said the ethos at the time was to ensure Stylecraft’s long-term impact on the environment was negligible, “in 2007 we were setting some ambitious goals to grow Stylecraft. We knew that we would be employing more staff, opening new showrooms and that as our business grew so would our carbon footprint. A firm commitment was made at that time to become carbon neutral which would ensure that as Stylecraft grew, our carbon footprint would not. Stylecraft is committed to leaving the planet better off than how we found it.”

As a company, we continually search for ways to reduce generated emissions and focus upon adhering to our carbon management plan in a transparent and diligent manner. Specifically, our carbon strategy involves neutralising our carbon emissions in an effort to help slow global warming by purchasing green energy credits through South Pole Group (formerly Climate Friendly™). Of recent, Stylecraft are committed to supporting the Tasmanian Native Forest Protection Project with our carbon credits. This project involves the protection of land in the Tasmanian Central Highlands which has been logged in the past and in the absence of carbon revenue would continue to be either logged or cleared for agriculture.

While carbon neutrality remains intrinsic to Stylecraft’s overall environmental strategy, we also focus upon assisting our clients specifying furniture for Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) rated projects. A large number of Stylecraft products have received third party environmental certifications from Good Environmental Choice of Australia (GECA), Ecospecifier and AFRDI Green Tick programs. The environmental certification schemes include the material composition of products, manufacturing processes, product stewardship, the manufacturers adherence to energy and waste minimisation and compliance to government pay award and safe work practice legislation. These criteria are also assessed within the internationally recognised ISO 14001 environmental Management System certification which a number of our local and international partners have achieved.

Stylecraft’s long term goals related to meaningful environmental practice and reduction of carbon footprint will continue to evolve and progress through a focus on due diligence and remaining up-to-date with the latest environmental responsible opportunities. Anthony added, “our vision for Stylecraft is that we are a ‘net positive’ business in the way that we impact the environment and society. That is, that the world is a better place for having Stylecraft rather than without Stylecraft.”
