The Macquarie University Incubator is an example of innovative collaboration between client, designer and contractors. The project has attracted considerable attention within the design community resulting in numerous prestigious industry awards, including the 2018 Sustainable Building Award in the Education and Research category.
The design by Architectus aimed to meet the diverse and changing needs of its occupants, as well as the two key aspects that informed the design of the space; a relocatable building and a short timeframe for its implementation. Timber was selected as the main construction material for its capacity to be skilfully engineered and its potential for future dis-assembly and relocation. The resulting building was completed within five months of construction commencing and resulted in a striking timber structure, winning The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design International Architecture Award for 2018.
